ĦAL MULA URBAN REGENERATION
2021
Life, Place & Future: Exploring the Potential (In partnership with the Housing Authority of Malta)
Students had the opportunity to take a people-centered approach to this project, which involved meeting and talking with residents during their daily routines. This led to analyse and uncover significant user attitudes and practices. Residents who took part in our fieldwork were mostly of an older generation, reflecting Hal Mula’s current demographics. The following are some of their response:
-
"In the summer, we put out chairs and talk late into the evenings while enjoying the fresh breeze!"
-
"We enjoy seeing our grandchildren playing in the open spaces in front of our homes!"
Based on so, the final masterplan prioritises five key points: movement (having a main walking loop), generational considerations, community involvement, green and blue infrastructure, and resident control of Hal Mula.
The green and blue infrastructure aspects of the design were thoroughly researched; the vegetation selection is based on various seasonal fruit trees that are traditionally used in Malta to enhance the area's character while also creating a sense of vibrancy and liveliness. These trees provide the necessary shade to keep the climate comfortable during the summer. Additionally, a retention pond is a major design element and the primary source of water management for Hal Mula, particularly for storm water runoff. It attracts people as well as biodiversity, whether it is full or empty.
